These days the average human lives on the surface of the mind by the habit of indentifying with a myriad of distractions, all with the root being the you-center. By distraction I am referring to moving away from the root of Truth.
You are not behaving like the average human however or you would not be reading these words. Truly all that is required is to be content with nothing at all but the mind and hence the you-center seems incapable of doing this one simple thing.
Through a lifetime of watching, witnessing and self-observation this Awakening or Insight is possible. As we move through the layers of mind, body and emotions we can see all the habitual patterns, emotions and sensations that bubble up. In the past we might have judged these movements and tried to change. Now with innocence we can watch the show and practice not judging by “doing nothing” with the stuff as it arises within this alert field.
Ultimately, what we are being shown by the universe is that there is nothing in the way and nothing we have to do with all that stuff that comes up. It may suck and we may want to blow the heck out of it but what can we really do? Maybe this is what awakening really is all about.
There is a shortcut that can bypass all the observation and endless letting go. The you-center can get caught up in this process forever. This is the you-center becoming more and more aware of what is going on. There must be a better way. There must be a sense that “you” are doing the observation at times and at other times you are not there to control it. This awareness is natural as awareness is already aware with or without the sense of being aware or “being the subject” that is being aware. It just happens naturally doesn’t it?
The short cut is being content with nothing at all.
This is being okay that you are not controlling the process.
Is the idea of not being in control scary or liberating? Maybe both?
The mind and sense of separation cannot stand being content with nothing since it threatens the sense of “being someone” and “doing something” that is the root of the effort to wake up and indeed all effort and struggle to get something out of life.
Life is already amazing; there is nothing to get with effort. It will get you and show you how little you know. Ultimately, “I don’t know” is all we can say.
By being content with nothing at all, which is like another meditation for “no one” in particular, the little self vanishes and self-awareness is the automatic byproduct.
Being aware and observing the dynamics of this wondrous thing we call a human being is fun and enjoyable.
Being content with nothing at all speeds things up since there is no possibility of identification while being content with nothing. Identification seems to happen but then the natural effortlessness of attention simply notices without judgement and there is no longer any need to do something about it.
All that ever happens in the human is this contentment in Nothing and then distraction if there is identification with the you-center.
The thing is, since there is never any real control, the arising of energy and the seeing of habits does not become a huge obstacle to get rid of. The you-center desires it to disappear, to go away and this is why it needs to do something. It needs to change. The you-center also arises without control.
This is an important distinction and why this is a short cut to the essence of self-awareness or observation. The short cut happens because you are not doing the observation, the observation is already happening. Allowing this makes all the difference and calms the seas of the “addiction” and need to do something.
The observation works and is the only road but ultimately the process of self-observation leads to the same place of being content with nothing.
After practicing “being aware” for a certain time it is possible to awaken to the fact that all there is is awareness. You can hear about these experiences, as they are common on the spiritual path. Most notably those who study the mind will come to this conclusion since it is a practice that the mind can wrap its mind around. This practice is the ego trying to kill the ego but nonetheless as far as practices go, you could do much worse than simple observation without judgment. What better thing could this “you” do for “you?”
However, once or “if” the self-observation pays off and the inevitable is realized, the conclusion of the story is the same. The you-center disappears and is seen to have never being in control of anything. What follows is the eternal discovery of being content with nothing at all. The Cosmic Joke is that this was and IS always the case already.
So... does this awakening mean that this natural effortless attention stops?
Of course not, it is still very present.
Does this mean that we do not see patterns, have feelings or try to change something again?
Of course not, everything continues but now it is easy to simply be awake to life happening without the distraction of having to change, control and manipulate anything at all.
The point is that you as the reader do not have to wait for this to happen down the road after many years of intense practice. The invitation is to cheat the false system of “getting somewhere in the future.” Right now the system is the one cheating. Seekers are self-observing to become content with being a spirit in a human body. You can simply do that now by being content with nothing at all. This way there is “no way” you cannot be aware and “on track,” since you have given up the reins to all there is. This is much easier than any effort to become.
At first this nothingness might seem very small and unimportant but it becomes very clear, very fast that it is everything we want and full of unimaginable joy, humility, wisdom, grace and peace. It already takes up a big chunk of your life when you sleep and dissolve into it. Do you enjoy a good night’s rest? Think about being conscious of this Silence of deep rest and peace. This same silence is there all day long and you experience it in snippets. Your birthright as a spiritual being is to experience it 24/7. This is the simplicity of no way... you already are it!
Simply be content with nothing at all, could it be that simple?
By the way, maybe you are wondering what to do with all the stuff (especially the ugly stuff) that comes up for you on the spiritual path?
By being content with nothing at all, automatically there is no need to do anything with the “stuff” and this removes the illusion of separation and control.
In other words, “it’s all good.”
